Christmas '84

by Aisle 9

/

about

This song is about my memories of my own Christmas back in 1984. The track is about family, and about growing up with dreams; dreams about how powerful and important music can be. Music for me has really gone on to shape the whole course of my life.

1984 was a very powerful year, it was the year that music tried to change the world. Tried to really make a real difference. The charts were full of incredible songs from great artists, most of whom are now household names.

So the music comes from my distant memories of a quiet Christmas day spent at home with my family. Things felt simpler and less technical then. And I had my new ZX Spectrum to keep me company.

lyrics

Looking at a photograph
From Christmas 84
Just a young boy
Standing in the snow

Well I remember when
We all tried to Feed The World
And Do They Know It’s Christmas
Made me cry

Well I can still recall
When Maggie made us sell it all
Left penny less miners
With no pits

Women Dancing in the dark
Underneath that Purple Rain
Living in a box
To ban the bomb

So lift me up
On angel wings
I want to fly

Darkest winter’s night
Above fields of dreams
Over Christmas skies

Staring at a photograph
From Christmas 84
The face in the glass
Still looks like mine

Footloose and fancy free
With only music and guitars
To fill up
All my precious time

Well I can still recall
Hanging stockings on the wall
Peeling Tangerine Dreams
From my bed

I’d watch the Queen at 3
Fools And Horses on TV
Fall asleep with ZX chip tunes
In my head

So lift me up
On angel wings
I want to fly

Darkest winter’s night
Above fields of dreams
Over Christmas skies

So lift me up
On angel wings
I want to fly

Darkest winter’s night
Above fields of dreams
Christmas skies

So can you hear
The holy choir
Of angels sing

Cross the darkest night
All those city lights
The church bells ring

So lift me up
On angel wings
I want to fly

Darkest winter’s night
Above fields of dreams
Over Christmas skies
